I sent my son to his mom’s with one of the USB Serial boards I built along with a breadboard, an RBBA a pile of resistors and an led array. I thought about this arrangement and decided that I would try to build a breadboard attached programmer that would not be dangling off the edge of the board and in the way.

I am wondering if this isn’t the way to go with the seminar kits.

Board Positive (link to rev A board at 600%)

I am considering a rev B. The tx and rx are reversed and I think I should put 3 pin headers on the power rails. I am also thinking about putting the 3.3v on the inner rail and the 5V on the outer rail on the positive side.

I also made a couple of these but I am missing something and this one doesn’t work (yet)

    I like it! Most of us are breadboarding these things anyway, so that’s a great deployment strategy. :) This setup would work with one of the breadboards I have, but the other has the two terminal strips on the same side of the board. What about the idea of making the board slightly longer and exposing +5V and GND on both ends of the board? That way it would work with just about any breadboard. You just solder the pins where you need them for whichever board you use. See my pics of my Serial LCD which have a pic of my small breadboard.

    Yesterday I swapped the new board out with my kid who was pretty happy with the new setup. I was noticing a variety of spacings for the power rails once I brought them to group. The prevailing wind is to keep the board small as possible for cost but the larger space would also give it a bit more stability.

    Nice idea.

    I have mine (DBPDX02) talking to a breadboaded atmega8. Took me a few tries to figure out which was rx and which was tx. I’d switch these to make them in the same order as the reset rx tx pins on the mcu. Reset doesn’t work for me every time, but that may only be because I hacked my bootloader for a shorter reboot time, a la diecimilla. Also, it only fits one of my many bread boards. A more flexible power connection would be, well, more flexible! Perhaps a little pigtail with a plug on the end? That said, the thing is nice enough as it is, that I’m happy to go get a breadboard that fits it.
